Location, location, location…connectivity for social growth
The city of Malmø is the third biggest in Sweden and the last decades has faced a growth that requires urban response to address the social needs that have raised. A vast industrial block in the now city’s residential areas is segregating the residents. Hoping to preserve the historical layers of the urban fabric but yet adapt to the challenge a strategy of creating activities and providing accessibility on site is being studied.
For activating the area a sports venue, which is highly favorable in the country, is becoming the heart of the scheme. The major attractor on its own cannot sustain a systematic socio economical flow therefor more opportunities of development have been placed in the area. Diversity in activities enriches a longer term planning. The velodrome’s roof is the key design feature for hosting a social piazza on the street level and shaping the underground sport facilities. In order to have a lightweight roof of this span, the piazza hovers on top and lays its edges on the ending sides.
